

The very earliest forms of life evolved to use carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. When the Earth first formed, about 4.54 billion years ago, volcanic activity resulted in an atmosphere that was mostly carbon dioxide. Let’s begin the story with carbon: fourth most abundant element in the universe and tenth most abundant in the Earth’s crust ( give or take). The word “carbon” comes from the Latin “ carbo”, meaning coal and charcoal.
